…the sky ladder is a sequence of sixteen pine planks hung from ceiling to floor, made in collaboration with members of the Bål Nango family, a Sámi family of reindeer herders and land guardians. Rows of holes mark horizontal contours in each wood plank, each drilled by a member of the Bål Nango family to outline mountain ranges and other significant landscapes of their herding traditions. The planks of the ladder are both a shifting transcription of the land, and a score for relaying the continual site-specific knowledge of the family. A turntable in the attic of the museum plays sounds from the making of the planks while the family members share intergenerational stories of the places they call home.
